850,000-year-old human footprints found in England

The oldest footprints made by humans in Europe have been found in Britain. They are very old, but there are three other sets of footprints in Africa that are even older.

Scientists used digital cameras to take pictures of the footprints and made a 3D image. They showed the pictures and model at a press conference at the British Museum in London. The scientists believe that most of the footprints belong to children, but they also found footprints from at least one adult.

Finding ancient footprints like these is very rare. Scientists say that this discovery will change what we know about how humans lived in Britain and Europe.

The oldest footprints ever found

The oldest human footprints ever found were discovered in Tanzania and Kenya.

The Laetoli Trail in Tanzania, left by two or possibly three human ancestors, is estimated to be 3.6m years old.

Two sets of footprints found in 2009 near Ileret in Kenya, showing an arched foot, short toes, and a parallel big toe – described by scientists as "an essentially modern foot function" – were dated to 1.5m years.
