Seven out of ten patients admitted to hospital with coronavirus in the UK still have symptoms five months after being discharged, a study has found. Researchers examined more than 1,000 patients who left hospital between March and November 2020.
They found that 71% had not fully recovered five months later; and among those who had previously been employed, 18% were no longer able to work. One in five met the threshold for a new disability; a quarter were suffering from clinically significant levels of anxiety and depression; and 17% had some kind of "brain fog".
Other common symptoms identified in the study (which has yet to be peer- reviewed) included muscle pain, difficulty sleeping, breathlessness, short-term memory loss and joint pain. Almost four in ten of those studied were deemed to have been severely, or very severely, affected.
