Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is the main cause of preventable heart disease. It affects 1.3 billion people worldwide. New guidelines from a hypertension society suggest doing 45 minutes of meditation daily to lower blood pressure. They recommend combining this with established advice like reducing salt, drinking less alcohol, and regular exercise. Although meditation might sound a bit "fluffy," it has shown to be important in reducing stress on the heart.
Hypertension is often called a "silent killer" because it doesn't usually show symptoms. It raises the risk of heart disease, heart failure, and strokes, causing about 10 million deaths each year. Nearly 30 percent of people worldwide have high blood pressure. The author of the study said, "We all need to take a step back and relax." The American Heart Association also says meditation can help lower blood pressure by bringing about "peaceful alertness." They state that various studies demonstrate that calming the mind is good for the heart.
