For older individuals, getting a good night's sleep might depend on the temperature of their room. According to researchers, maintaining a bedroom temperature between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius is the ideal way to ensure good sleep. This insight comes from a study conducted by researchers at Harvard University and the Hinda and Arthur Marcus Institute for Aging Research in the USA. As part of the study, 50 individuals aged 65 and above were asked to wear sleep monitors for a year and a half. The findings revealed that sleep quality declined when the room temperature fell outside the 20-25-degree range. Interestingly, the most optimal temperature was identified as 20 degrees Celsius. The head researcher stated, "Sleep tends to come easier and is often deeper and more restful in a cooler environment."
The research presents interesting revelations. It indicates that temperature could impact sleep as significantly as pain or consuming alcohol before bedtime. The researchers observed a decrease of 5-10 percent in sleep quality when the temperature went below 20 degrees Celsius or above 25 degrees Celsius. They emphasized that poor sleep can lead to health problems, including difficulties in clear thinking, mood fluctuations, and heightened stress levels. Additional issues encompass an elevated risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular conditions. The researchers recommended creating a "more comfortable home environment" to promote better sleep. They also highlighted the potential influence of climate change on the sleep quality of older adults.
