UK blood contamination scandal

In the 1970s and 80s, many UK hemophilia patients got sick from contaminated blood products provided by the NHS, which is a government-funded health service. The treatment, which was imported from the US, was called Factor 8 and Factor 9 and it was made from blood plasma. Unfortunately, some of the blood came from high-risk groups like drug users and prisoners, which led to patients getting sick with hepatitis C and HIV. Over 3,000 people passed away due to this.

The former prime minister, Theresa May, said it was a terrible tragedy that should never have occurred and she ordered an inquiry in 2017. Now, the Infected Blood Inquiry has said that families of victims should receive an initial payment of 125,000 dollars before the final payment is decided. The inquiry only happened because campaigners worked hard to make the government understand how much pain the families have gone through.
